Jean Paul Gaultier’s Amy Winehouse Tribute

January 27th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

For his Spring 2012 Couture show, flamboyant French designer Jean Paul Gaultier used his sartorial talents to pay tribute to another outrageous and talented icon, the late Amy Winehouse. While acoustic versions of Amy’s beloved songs played in the background, models strolled down the runway in bustier dresses, teased beehive hairdos, and mesh skirts, with some of them even holding cigarettes in their hands.

Backstage, Gaultier spoke to reporters and told them, “Amy Winehouse was a true style icon. What she stands for above all, is uniqueness. Both in music and the way she dressed, she mixed a great many influences to create her style.”

Most critics have praised the show, but Amy’s still-grieving family, particularly her father, have spoken out against the collection, calling it insensitive and “in bad taste.”

Even Kelly Osbourne, a friend of Amy’s, chimed in on the collection, tweeting, “Although @JPGaultier was paying homage to my friend & icon to the world, I found it to be lucratively selfish and distasteful. Exploitation=evil.”

We agree that Amy was a fashion icon who deserves to be recognized for her singular style, but maybe JPG could have postponed the show for a later date, after family and friends had had significant time to heal.

Do you think the show was in poor taste?

Weird Fashion

January 25th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

We all know that fashion can be ridiculous even at the best of times. Honestly, we’d be hard-pressed to recall how many times we’ve seen something on the runway and thought, “What on earth is that? Who in their right mind would wear this?” But some of the pieces from the 2012 menswear collections have left us speechless, in a bad way. At the very least we can say they resemble Halloween costumes you’d assemble after raiding your grandparent’s attic while drunk and possibly sleep-deprived. In any case, we give kudos to any and all men who could pull off these crazy looks. And serious props to the models for managing to keep a straight face.

Chanel, Lagerfield and an Airplane… In the Grand Palais

January 24th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

If you thought Karl Lagerfield had done everything, think again. For the most recent Chanel Runway show, the style master put a plane in the Grand Palais and turned it into a runway. As if that wasn’t enough, there were, what appeared to be clouds floating by the windows outside.

For the show, Lagerfield designed clothes in shades of blue and white, with sleek sillouhettes. These lines were complemented by the slit pockets in nearly every design, which the models all kept their hands in during their walks. This helped accent the straight lines and complementary designs of every ensemble.

What do you think, was this Lagerfield’s greatest, most creative show to date?

It’s Friday and you just got paid, which is code for skipping out on all obligations and diving headfirst into the night with wild abandon. We hope that instead of vegging out in front of the TV in your cozy sweats (the hole-y ones that you just can’t part with), you’ll be putting on something slinky and hot, and painting your eyes black so you can paint the town red.

Smokey eyes are sensual and seductive, and just what you need to break out of the work-week rut. TGIF!

Best Bet: Too Faced Smokey Eye Palette—everything you need to achieve the perfect smokey eye in one affordable palette. Currently on sale on the Modnique site until Tuesday, so hurry up and grab one before they’re all gone!

Narciso Rodriguez for Rent The Runway

January 20th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

As you may recall, we love affordable fashions, (then again, what’s not to love?) so we nearly fell out of our chairs when we learned about the Narciso Rodriguez for Rent the Runway. Rent the Runway is an innovative company that allows fashion-hungry consumers to rent heavily discounted designer clothes. For example, a Narcisco Rodriguez gown that you would have to purchase for $3,500, you can rent for only $400. The rental prices are still a bit high (though a huge bargain if you compare it to the retail price), but if you want to indulge and splurge on a high-quality designer gown for a special occasion (say, a best friend’s wedding or milestone birthday), Rent the Runway is the way to go. The entire renting process is simple and hassle-free. All you have to do is pick the look you want, select the date you want it to arrive (which can be up to six months in advance), keep it for up to 8 days, then return it by popping the package in the mail. If your rented dress doesn’t fit, you can return it for full merchandise credit. Easy, right?

The Narciso Rodriguez dresses for Rent the Runway are simple, sophisticated, and feminine. As one of the premier women’s wear designers, and two-time CFDA fashion award winner, Rodriguez knows how to cut and drape a dress to create the most flattering silhouette. No surprise that some of the hottest and most stylish celebrities in Hollywood crave his designs. Everyone from Jennifer Aniston to Sarah Jessica Parker to FLOTUS Michelle Obama have worn his creations. And now, with Rent the Runway, the rest of us mere mortals finally have a chance to look like stars without going bankrupt.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

January 19th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Why be a model? “Because it doesn’t require any special skills,” according to supermodel Cindy Crawford’s ten-year-old daughter, Kaia Gerber. We don’t know how Cindy feels about that particular assessment, but we think Kaia looks cute and confident in this first available shot from the new Versace line for kid’s.

Kaia initially showed interest in following her mother’s footsteps when she was only 8 years old, though Cindy put the kibosh on that right away, stating, “She’s definitely tall, but hopefully I can keep her away from it for a little while.” Cindy herself was around 17 when she first entered the modeling world, so it’s understandable that she’d want her only daughter to be a bit more mature before stepping in front of the camera. Though we think 10 is still too young, no? Of course, Kaia will always have her mother there to guide her. Not surprisingly, Cindy was at the Young Versace photo shoot with Kaia, and had this to say about it afterwards in a press release:

“I’m so thrilled that Kaia was chosen to be part of the first Young Versace Campaign. I have so many fond memories of the times I spent with Gianni and Donatella. There is something so very special about the House of Versace. Being on-set with my daughter watching her in front of the camera was a fantastic experience. I am so proud of her.”

Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, the full campaign will debut after Young Versace’s first show during Pitti Immagine Bimbo in Florence tomorrow.
